ACT in Nigeria

Overview

Nigeria is the largest populated country in Africa with about 180 million inhabitants, more than 60 percent of whom are under 25 years of age. Each Nigerian represents one of every four Africans. The country has about 250 ethnic groups, each with its own language. The capital is Abuja, located at the centre of the country. Lagos, the former capital, is the business and commercial capital of the country. Although rich in crude oil and gas, Nigeria is a poor nation with very high wealth disparities. Nigeria is bordered by Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and the Atlantic Ocean.

How it began

ACT began work in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2000 collaborating with Olive Tree Parish (RCCG). Our operations expanded to Ajah, Ilaro (Ogun State) and Ile-Ife (Osun State).

Since 2012, our work has focused in Ipaja-Alimosho, in the northeast of Lagos State, in collaboration with Ipaja Community Link (ICL).

We run weekend tutorial lesson classes for the children. The ICL summer school is popular across the community and keeps children occupied with activities, as well as prepare the children who have completed primary school for the start of their first year at secondary school.

In 2019, students from St Chad’s Primary school chose to partner with ACT to carry out a Christmas Shoebox Appeal. The appeal provided 40 Christmas presents for ACT orphans in the Ipaja Community. Click here to read more.
